14. The Internet—A Two—Edged Sword(因特网——双刃剑)

14. The Internet—A Two—Edged Sword(因特网——双刃剑)

There is a good side and a bad side to everything—and that includes the Internet.
There is no denying that the Internet can vastly improve the efficiency of scientific
research; it allows scientists swift access to all the data and research findings in their
fields available worldwide. Moreover, as information is as valuable as any material
resource, anyone who has access to the Internet has a competitive advantage in
business over those who don't. Last but not least, the Internet has made personal
communication both more convenient and more rapid.
While there is a great of enthusiasm nowadays over the advantages of the Internet, its drawbacks should not be neglected. Not all the information available on the
Internet is either useful or harmfulness; subversive and pornographic items can
infiltrate the message downloaded by people unfamiliar with the "web".

words:
vastly  adv.  广大的
efficiency  n.
available  adj.
material  n.
competitive  adj.
communication  n.
convenient  adj.
enthusiasm  n.
drawback  n.
subversive  adj.
pornographic  adj.
infiltrate  v.  渗透
download  v.

24.Theaters Going Digital(影院进入数字化时代)

24.Theaters Going Digital(影院进入数字化时代)

Grab the popcorn, film lovers. You may be about to sit through one of the best movie outcomes in years: digital cinema.
The digital image is brighter, sharper, the colors are more crisp and the image is a bit steadier. A digital film can be sent to theaters via satellite, optical discs or fiber optic networks. And subtitles can be exchanged in and out minutes before show time.
India has started one of the most ambitious digital cinema investment programs. New investment is also under way in many European and Asian countries. China's first digital cinema theatre is located in the Xujiahui district of Shanghai on the top floor of one of the city's largest shopping malls, the Grand Gateway. The theatre screens both local and imported films
It is likely that Europe and Asia will quickly surpass the United States—the early digital cinema pioneer—as the new word capitals.

words:
digital  adj.  数字的
grab  v.
popcorn  n.
outcome  n.
crisp  adj.
steady  adj.
via  prep.
satellite  n.
optical  adj.
fiber  n.  光纤
subtitle  n.
ambitious  adj.
investment  n.

27.Makiing Friends(交友)

27.Makiing Friends(交友)

Everyone needs friends, and if you fail to make friends, it is time to look at yourself and see if something in your personality is to blame. Maybe you have social faults such as snobbishness, talkativeness, and using slang, etc. Which drive away new acquaintances. Whatever your social fault may be, look at it honestly, and really try to correct it.
To be friendly you must feel friendly. Cheerfulness is the basis of friendliness, and a cheerful person smiles. A smile is a magnet which draws people. Smile at someone and you are almost sure to get a smile in return.
A friendly person does his best to make stranger feel at home , wherever he happens to be. Put yourself in the other fellow's place and make him feel welcome.
A friendly person thinks of others of others, and does not insist on his own “rights”. People who refuse to consider others have few friends.
Finally, don't make the mistake of treating people according to their social standard. Real friendliness respects everyone at all time.

words:
balme  v.
fault  n.
snobbishness   n.  势利
talktiveness  n.
slang  n.
acquaintance  n.
basis  n.
magnet  n.
fellow  n.
treat  v.
standard  n.

30.How to Make Love Grow(如何让爱升华)

30.How to Make Love Grow(如何让爱升华)

Love never just happen. There is, I think, a climate that is best for love—a way of living.
First, love needs time. Perhaps people can fall in love in a moment, but mature love is like a tree, moving slowly from the seed in the ground to the sheltering splendor of its prime. People need time to deepen their affection, to appreciate one another's differences, to share one another's joys and griefs.
What's more, love needs words to make it real. Without words, quarrels can't be resolved, resentment can't come to the surface, we lose the power to share the meaning of our lives. There are many ways fo communicating. The important thing is to acknowledge and express our feelings.
Love is not a single act, but a climate in which we live, a lifetime venture in which we are always learning, discovering, growing. Love is a climate—a climate of the heart.

word:
climate  n.
mature  adj.
shelter  v.
splendor  n.
prime  n.
deepen  v.
affection  n.
appreciate  v.
grief  n.
quarrel  n.
resentment  n.
communicate  v.
acknowledge  v.
venture  n.

33.How Americans spend Their Free Time(美国人怎样度过闲暇时间)

Americans spend their free time in various ways.
American is a country of sports—of hunting, fishing and swimming, and of team sports like baseball and football. Millions of Americans watch their favorite sport on television. They also like to play in cmmunity orchestras, make their own films or recordings, go camping, visit museums, attend lectures, travel, garden, read, and jion in hundreds of other activities. The people also enjoy building things for their homes, sewing their own clothes, even making their own photograhs. They do these things for fun as well as for economy.
But as much as Americans enjoy their free time, the country is at the same time a “self—improvement” country. More than 25 million adults continue their education, chiefly by going to school in the evening, during their own free time, at their own expense. Added to the time spent on personal activities, Americans also devote a great amount of their time to the varied needs of their communities. Many hospitals. schools, libraries, museums, parks, community centers, and organizations that assist the poor depend on the many hours citizens devote to these activities, often without any pay.

community  n.
orchestra  n.
