36.Youth(青春)

36.Youth(青春)

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a tempermental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man fo 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinklw the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self—distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long sa it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
                                                                                                                                             Samuel Erman①

Man and His EnvironmentThroughout history man has changed his physical environment in order to improve his way of life. With the tools of technology he has altered many physical features of the earth. He has transformed woodlands and prairies into farms and made lakes and reservirs out of rivers for errigation purpose or hydroelectric power. Man has also modified the face of the earth by draining marshes and cutting through mountains to build roads and railways.
However, man’s changes to the physical environment have not always had beneficial results. Today, pollution of the air and water is an increasing danger to the health of the planet. Each day thousands of tons of gases come out of the exhausts of motor vehicles. Smoke from factories pollutes the air of industrialized areas and the surrouding areas of the countryside. The pollution of water is equally harmful. The whole ecological balance of the sea is being changed and industrial wastes have already made many rivers lifeless.
Now environment protecion is more pressing than ever before. As we know, massive destrucion of environment has brought about negative effects and even poses a great threat to man’s existence. Indifference to theses problems will mean committing suicide. Therefore, effective measures should be taken and laws pssed to conserve environment.     I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creeed:"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and sons of former slaves-owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.  I have a dream—
That one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis fo freedom and justice; I have a dream—
That my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will nott be judged by the color of their skin but by content of their character; I have a dream today.
I have a dream that one day down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullificaion, one day right here there in Alabama liitle black boys and black girls will be able to jion hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers;  I have a dream today.

A4.What kind of Man Do You Wish to Be?

A4.What kind of Man Do You Wish to Be?
What kind of man you wish to be you will be. Oh! What a glorious saying this is! But can we really attain our aims if we only wish? Of course, the answer is in the negative.
You may become a lawyer only after you have mastered laws, a merchant only after you have had commercial experience, and a general only after you have learnt military tactics. In short, you may become what you wish to be only if you possess the necessary ability and knowledge.
Every boy should ask himself this question, "What kind of man do I wish to be in the future, a scholar, a merchant, a farmer, or a workman?"
Having settled that question, one should hold to one's purpose with firmness and unfaltering devotion. Having one objective today and another objective tomorrow is very bad. Success comes only after struggles with natural obstacles.

词汇
merchant  n.  商人
commercial  a.
militay  a.
possess  v.
settle  v.
firmness  v.
unfaltering  a.
objective  n.
