【课前准备导读】

一、学习目标

本单元以谈论“发明创造”为话题,让学生深入了解发明创造应具备的先决条件及艰难历程;激发学生进行发明创造的兴趣;熟练掌握并运用有关描述一种发明物的交际用语;进一步复习限制性定语从句的用法;并让学生展开丰富联想完成本单元的书面表达。

二、语言点讲解

1. Match each picture with the correct description below.把下面描述与每幅图进行匹配。

①be equal to or corresponding (in quality, colour, design, design, etc.) (在品质、颜色、设计等方面)相等;相当;相配 eg:

The carpets should match the curtains.地毯该和窗帘相配。

(2)adj. ①be fit for/to do: suitable or suited合适的;切合的 eg:

The food was not fit to eat.那食物不适宜吃。

②in good athletic; in good health强健的;健康的 eg:

I hope you are keeping fit. 我希望你能保持健康。

注:fit与suit 二者都用作动词,可指衣服“合适”或“适合”的意思。但fit指大小,尺寸合适;suit则指颜色,花样或款式适合。 eg:

These shoes don’t fit me—have you got a large size?

这鞋我穿着不合适——你们有大点的吗?

Red and black are colours that suit me well.黑红两色是很适合我的颜色。

6. You will never have to worry about having your bike stolen again.你将永远不会担心自行车被偷走。

(1)have sth. done 使某事被做(由其他人来做) eg:

Yesterday, I had my car repaired. 昨天,我让修理师给我修了车。

Oh her way home, she had her wallet stolen on the bus.

1. What are the advantages of Mr Dean’s new invention?迪恩先生的新发明有哪些优点呢?

advantage[ d′v ntId ]n.

(1)[C]sth. useful or helpful, sth. likely to bring success优点;优势 eg:

Living in a big town has many advantages, such as good schools, libraries, and theatres.住在大都市里有许多优点:有好学校,图书馆和剧院。

the advantages of a good education良好教育的益处

have/gain/ win an advantage(over); give sb. an advantage(over)

占/获得/羸得/给某人优势 eg:

Tom’s university education gave him an advantage over boys who had not been to a university.汤姆的大学教育使他较其他未上大学的男孩子占优势。

(1)away from one’s front; towards the back向后 eg:

Can you say the alphabet backwards?你能倒念英语的二十六个字母吗?

注:-ward(s)是一个词缀,表示“朝向”(in the direction of),用以构成形容词或副词。 eg:

forward(s)向前的(地); upward(s) 向上的(地)

downward(s)向下的(地);eastward(s)向东的(地)

homeward(s)朝家的方向的(地)

4. reappear[ ri ′pI ]vi. appear again再出现 eg:

The sun reappears after the storm. 暴风雨过后,太阳又出来了。

注:re-是一个前缀,表示“再”(again)。 eg:

retell v. 复述;reborn adj.(喻)再生的,新生的;

rebuild vt.重建;replay v.重新比赛,再播放。

二、如何听的建议

1.培养听的良好心态

听力测试题不同于其他题型,不可能像其他题型一样遇到不明白的地方可以回过来看前面的材料或停下来思考一下。听力测试的做题速度是由命题者统一掌握的,录音材料瞬间即逝,无“回听”的机会或自由思考的余地。考生临场心态对听力成绩有着极大的影响。因此考生必须培养良好的心态。

2.合理分配注意力

(1)要充分利用两题之间的停顿时间,快速有效地阅读题目,这样在听录音时可以缩小注意力范围,把注意力集中在与所提问题有关的关键词上,减少了盲目性,加强了针对性。如所提问题是有关时间的,就可以在听录音时特别注意出现的时间,从而做出正确的选择。

(2)学会边听边记,特别是较长的对话和独白。记录时要有重点,有技巧。例如:用阿拉伯数字记数字,用字母代替地名或人员,单词用缩写,句子记关键词等。

(3)学会听关键词,要把注意力相对集中在关键词上,例如:表示意义转折、否定或递进的词:but, however, not, to , what’s more, what’s worse, besides等;还有表示时间、数字、年代等概念的数词。这些词往往是非常重要的语言信息。

一、语言点讲解

1. Each inventor should explain how the invention works and why it is useful.每一个发明者应该解释他的发明如何运作以及它为什么有用。

explain[Ik′spleIn]vt.

(1)explain sth. to sb./ to sb. sth.:make plain or clear解释;说明 eg:

A dictionary tries to explain the meanings of words to its reader.

词典是向读者解释词义的工具书。

Please explain to me what this means.请对我说明这是什么意思。

注:explain后接表示“人”的宾语时,之前必须带to,此时announce宣布,mention阐述与它的用法是一样的。 eg:

Mr Green announced to his friends his engagement to Miss White.

格林先生向他的朋友们宣布他已与怀特小姐订婚。

He mentioned it to me that he had seen you.他向我提到曾经见过你。

(2)explain sth. away: show why one should not be blamed for a fault, mistake, etc. 辩护 eg:

You will find it difficult to explain away your use of such offensive language.你使用这样无礼的语言是很难说得过去。

2.You have invented a car that uses water instead of petrol.你已发明一种汽车,它用水而不用汽油。

(1)think of与think about这两个短语表示下列意义时,可以互换。

①考虑 eg:

②对……有某种看法 eg:

What do you think of/ about the film?你认为那部影片怎么样?

(2)think of表示下列意义时,一般不和think about换用。

①想要;打算 eg:

③关心;想看 eg:

2. seem, look与appear

这三个词都可作“看上去好像”解,但各自有自己的适用范围及结构。 eg:

(1)seem指来自内心的“判断”,可以与to be连用,也可用于句型:It seems as if/that从句;There seems to be…中。 eg:

He seems to be a bit angry today.他今天看上去有点生气。

It seems as if it were spring already.(虚拟语气)

看上去好像已经是春天了。

It seems that he has made some serious mistakes in his work.

他好像在工作上犯了很严重的错误。

There seems (to be) no need to go.看上去没有必要走。

(2)look指从外表上看,它可用于look like介词短语,sb./It looks as if从句中。 eg:

He looks like his father.他看上去像他的父亲。

It looks as if we shall have to walk home.看上去我们要步行回家了。

(3)appear指给人以表面的印象,可用于It appears that从句或There appears to be…句型中。 eg:

It appeared that he was talking to himself.看上去他好像在自言自语。

3. respected, respectable与respectful

(1)respected与respectable的含义相同,表示“可敬的;值得尊敬的;有身份的;体面的”的意思(=worthy of respect)。 eg:

His parents were poor but respectable/ respected.

(2)respectful后接to或towards,表示“崇敬;有礼貌”的意思。 eg:

4. not …any longer与not…any more

这两个短语都有“不再”的意思,但也有不同之处。

(1)not…any longer=no longer,多与延续性动词连用,指“与过去比不再……”,句子常用现在时。no longer在句中位于行为动词前面,be动词后面。

eg: He doesn’t work at the factory any longer.他不再在那家工厂工作了。

You should believe me, I am no longer a child.

(2)not…any more=no more,常与瞬间动词连用,指“今后不再……”,句子常用将来时,过去时,表数量或程度时,常用no more。 eg:

5. fight for, fight against与fight with

(1)fight for意为“为(事业、自由、真理、权利等)而斗争(战斗)”,其后大多接抽象名词,有时可接表示人的名词。 eg:

We fight for the cause of communism.我们为共产主义事业而奋斗。

三、语言点讲解

1.…, but we must also realize that what we know and what we have learnt may also limit our thinking.但是我们也必须要意识到,我们所知道与所学的东西可能也会使我们的思维受局限。

what we know与what we have learnt为两个名词性从句,由and连接,在本句话中作宾语从句的主语。但当名词性从句作主语时,同学们总是把握不好句子的谓语动词该用单数还是复数,现解释如下:

(1)当由一个what引导的名词性从句作主语时,谓语的单复数形式取决于它后面的名词。 eg:

What we need is water/money.我们所需要的是水/钱。

What we need are experienced teachers.我们所需要的是有经验的老师。

(2)当由and连接并列两个what所引导的名词性从句时,谓语动词要用复数形式。 eg:

What you have seen and what you have heard are true.

你所看到与听到的事情都是真的。

(3)当由and连接并列两个疑问副词(when, where, why, how)所引导的名词性从句做主语时,谓语动词用单数。 eg:

When and where we will hold the meeting is not decided yet.

我们什么时候及在哪开会还没有决定。

“the+比较级+主+谓,the+比较级+主+谓”这一句型的含义为“越……,就越……”。 eg:

注:如上一句所示,progress为名词,无比较级,所以要借助于more。

3. 点拨:上述两个分句间是转折关系,而不是并列关系,故要用otherwise/or/or else三个连词,表示“否则;不然”之意。

2.病句:Please think out what I’ve said.

诊断:Please think over what I’ve said.
